Great Canadian Entertainment celebrates National AccessAbility Week
We are committed to creating a welcoming & inclusive environment for team members and guests
Great Canadian Entertainment is pleased to recognize May 28 to June 3, 2023, as National AccessAbility Week. This week is an opportunity to celebrate our contributions towards making all our destinations barrier-free, more accessible and inclusive space for everyone. These are some key highlights of the year:
- In 2023, River Rock Casino Resort became the first casino in Canada to receive the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification. The site has ramps; accessible parking in both the self-parking lot and access to a valet parking service; and accessible guest rooms in the hotel. Some of the features in the rooms include roll-in showers, accommodating mobility devices; widened doorways; and visual fire alarms so guests who are deaf or hard of hearing can respond accordingly.
- Casino Nova Scotia Halifax has a coat check that is accommodated for a team member who is blind – the tags for the coats are all in braille. In the event of fire alarms, there is emergency lighting in the back of house to accommodate team members who are deaf or hard of hearing. Elevators and washroom entryways are wide enough to facilitate a heavy motorized wheelchair.
- Casino Nova Scotia Sydney has made accommodations in the cage for a team member. A motorized wheelchair is provided for the team member to use during his shift. All washrooms for team members and guests are fully accessible. There is an emergency light designed to assist those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Casino New Brunswick is actively working with Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work to hire individual with diverse abilities. Job descriptions were created with CCRW to make jobs more accessible. Coat check accommodated team members with specific hours due to public transportation use. And a team member who is visually impaired was accommodated in the culinary department.
On behalf Great Entertainment, and more than 7,500 team members across all 25 destinations in Canada, happy National AccessAbility Week! Let’s continue to work together to build a better environment where people with disabilities aren’t just accommodated but included from the start.
