Dropkick Murphys
Dropkick Murphys, a punk rock band from Quincy, Massachusetts, formed in 1996. They gained fame through relentless touring and annual St. Patrick’s Day shows in Boston. Their music often features Celtic influences and working-class themes.
Signed by Rancid’s Tim Armstrong to Hellcat Records, they released their debut album Do Or Die in 1998, followed by The Gang’s All Here in 1999 and Sing Loud, Sing Proud in 2001, which featured collaborations with Shane MacGowan and Colin McFaull. Significant lineup changes occurred with the addition of James Lynch, Marc Orrell, Ryan Foltz, and Spicy McHaggis.
Their 2003 album Blackout included the hit “Walk Away” and the reworked Boston Red Sox anthem “Tessie.” In 2005, they released The Warrior’s Code, featuring the single “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” which appeared in Martin Scorsese’s film The Departed.
The Meanest of Times came out in 2007, their first on the Born & Bred label. Marc Orrell left in 2008, and Tim Brennan took over lead guitar, with Jeff DaRosa joining the band.
In 2022, they released This Machine Still Kills Fascists, an acoustic album using Woody Guthrie’s unused lyrics. Their twelfth album, Okemah Rising, recorded during the same sessions, was released on May 12, 2023, featuring singles “I Know How it Feels” and “Gotta Get to Peekskill” with Violent Femmes.
